If you are using an External battery (or car adapter), this is a REQUIREMENT because a PD circuit is required to communicate and charge all-new USB-C devices. **We have been getting a lot of emails requesting us to graft on the USB-C connector on the end of MagSafe cable or even put USB-C on ends of DC connectors. USB-C will not allow that because a PD (power delivery) circuit IS required to properly communicate with the attached device such as a MacBook. This adapter must be used to properly charge a USB-C device.**

***Based on our own in house 2018 MacBook Pro 15".  MacBook Pro 15" was on during charge at idle state.
